Vergara double wins La Salle its first game over UP in three years

The De La Salle University Men’s Football Team sent shockwaves across the UAAP Season 81 Men’s Football Tournament with a 2-1 win against defending champions University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, Thursday morning, at the FEU-Diliman turf in Quezon City.

La Salle’s victory over UP was a long time coming as it took three years and six games for the Taft school to finally cross the finish line.

Shanden Vergara’s free kick and long shot at the 36th and 65th minutes of the contest respectively handed Alvin Ocampo’s wards the driver’s seat for the contest until La Salle Green Hills alumnus Kyle Magdato handed the Fighting Maroons a lifeline at the 66th minute.

A scuffle then broke out between the two teams, which saw Vergara and substitute Mohammad Adil Almohjili given yellow cards for their roles in the incident. With UP bombarding the La Salle defense, rookie goalkeeper Gab Villacin then stepped up to prevent the Diliman school from putting in an equalizer.

Ultimately, it was the Green & White’s day to be happy as it ended the Fighting Maroons’ 16-game unbeaten run. With the result, La Salle now has three wins and 9 points in the standings.

DLSU resumes its campaign against FEU on March 17, 2019, 9:00 AM at the latter’s Diliman campus.
