La Salle is already making an early statement to regain the crown in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.
The Japan-trained Lady Spikers plummeled a hapless Adamson side, 25-14, 25-13, 25-15, for their first victory Sunday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Using its vaunted blocking to the hilt, La Salle simply dominated the match right from the get go, with the ‘Big 3’ Jacq Alarca, Cha Cruz at Stephanie Mercado combining for 36 hits.
Sophomore Abigail Maraño was also a big factor for the Lady Spikers, contributing 12 hits, including two blocks.
In the match lasted only for one hour and six minutes, La Salle blocked six attempts, including two from Michelle Gumabao.
“Advantage talaga namin ang height and naging effective ang aming blocking,” said La Salle mentor Ramil de Jesus.
La Salle is hoping to bounce back from a 0-2 setback to defending champion University of Santo Tomas in last season’s championship.
Angela Benting was the lone bright spot for the Lady Falcons with 10 hits.
Adamson, fourth placers last season, sorely missed the presence of libero Lizlee Ann Gata, who has already finished her playing years.
Aside from the difficulty in making attacks on the net against the tall Lady Spikers’ frontline, the Lady Falcons’ famed floor defense was non-existent.
Adamson was able to attempt the net 19 times, against 44 by La Salle.
