Aside from winning championships, a good barometer for a university’s athletics program is the number of athletes it contributes for the national team.
As the Philippine Women’s National Football Team continues its push to participate in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, head coach Let Dimzon has called upon six student-athletes from the DLSU Women’s Football Team and one alumna to play for flag and country.
Defenders Chelo Hodges and Christina Montelibano, midfielders Sara Castaneda, Maye Mendano and Irish Navaja and forward Shai Del Campo all made the cut for Dimzon’s squad alongside goalkeeper Inna Palacios, who played for the Green & White from UAAP Seasons 75 to 79 and won a championship in her final playing year.
They shall participate in the second round of the Asian Qualifiers in Doha, Qatar, and play the likes of Iran, Chinese Taipei and Palestine from April 3 to 9, 2019.
“I just want to wish coach Let of FEU, who’s the head coach of the national team, and some of our players as well as all of the UAAP players who are going to Qatar, well. Hopefully they have an injury-free campaign in Qatar and they do their best,” said La Salle coach Hans-Peter Smit last March 20, 2019, at the end of his team’s first round campaign.
The whole Lasallian community sends their best wishes for Hodges, Montelibano, Palacios, Castaneda, Mendano, Navaja, Del Campo and the rest of the team as they gear up to fulfill that Olympic dream.
